Sadly, we learned of the passing of Keith Sayers earlier this month. A former film buff and member of the Shoreham Film Club, Keith joined SDFM in 1989. A television and sound engineer by trade, he prefers the technical side of filmmaking, often working as a sound engineer behind the camera, lighting or on film. He was the cinematographer on SDFM’s first film, the psychological thriller Night Encounters, which was produced in the fall of 1989 and won the Albany Film Festival the following year. In November 1989, he recorded dialogue for SDFM’s second feature film comedy, The Laughing Stock.
When SDFM moved into the Ferring Village Hall club room in 1991, many years before the club had video projectors, they put a set of 22″ TV receivers (old square models) in the room, allowing more and more Members can watch screenings of video movies.
Still a film buff at heart, Keith left SDFM a few months later with another ex-Shoreham Film Club member, Ian Wingate, to start a small film club in Brighton, although he regularly serves as various SDFM the judges. these years. Keith then became active with SERIAC (IAC’s Southeast region) and became editor of SERIAC News. He is also an active member and committee member of the annual Sussex Film Festival and manages the sound and screenings of films in competition at both festivals.
When he died in hospital from pancreatic cancer on February 15, he was living alone in Brighton, but his cousin Carol was with him. He also has a niece.
