In a dramatic trial, Payton Gendron, a white supremacist who killed 10 black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, last year, has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to 25 charges, including first-degree murder and hate-motivated terrorism. During the sentencing, a family member of one of the victims rushed towards Gendron but was overpowered by security forces. Other relatives shared their emotional accounts of the impact of the shooting.
Barbara Macy, whose sister Catherine was killed, addressed Gendron directly and told him that he didn’t know anything about black people, and that they are all human. She also spoke of her son’s attempt to rush towards Gendron during the sentencing, saying that he was thrilled to see her as she was his mother.
Zaire Goodman’s mother expressed her pain in court, saying that her son was dealing with survivor guilt and that the shooter’s decision to devalue black lives had caused immense pain. Brian Talley, who lost a family member in the shooting, forgave Gendron, but not for his sake, rather for the sake of himself and the black community. All 10 people killed were black, and three others were injured.
Wayne Jones, son of victim Celestine Chaney, told Gendron that he was brainwashed and that he should apologize to the victims’ families. Tamika Harper shared memories of her murdered aunt, Geraldine Tully, and said that she didn’t hate Gendron and didn’t want him dead, but wanted him to think about what he had done every day of his life. Gendron, who wore bulletproof armor during the shooting and live-streamed it, expressed regret for his actions, saying that he acted out of hate and believed what he read online.
The judge, Susan Egan, announced that Gendron would receive no mercy or second chances and would not be eligible for parole. While New York state does not have the death penalty, federal prosecutors can use it for hate and domestic prosecutions. Gendron had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
