A 22-year-old homeless man has been charged with first-degree murder by the police after a teenager was accidentally and unprovokedly stabbed to death at Keele subway station on Saturday night. The incident occurred just before 9pm on the lower level of the busy elevated train station, marking the fourth killing on or near TTC property within a year. The TTC transit system has been experiencing a growing trend of serious violence and a decline in ridership due to the pandemic. The victim was identified as Gabriel Magalhaes, a 16-year-old Toronto native who was attacked while sitting on a bench opposite a row of payphones near the escalator leading to the westbound underground platform in Keir. Despite being treated by paramedics at the scene and being rushed to the hospital, Magalhaes succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect fled the station but was later apprehended and charged with Magalhaes’ murder. Jordan O’Brien-Tobin was due to appear in Toronto Crown Court on Sunday morning. The TTC and transit systems in North America are facing increased scrutiny due to the rise in serious violence on TTC buses, trains, trolleys, and stations. In 2022, there were 1,068 incidents of violence against passengers on the TTC, up from 669 in 2019. While the new mayor will try to curb this trend, the pandemic has led to a spike in traffic violence in major urban centers across the continent.

The police department added additional stripes on the TTC in late January, but the spike continued for six weeks until mid-March, when police services ceased. The TTC deploys officers to patrol the system during peak hours, and outreach workers from social service agency LOFT will work on the system itself with vulnerable groups who use stations and trains as a de facto shelter. The city also plans to hire 50 more SWAT officers to patrol the TTC.

Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvey expressed her condolences and said that the TTC must be a safe place for all passengers and transit workers. On Sunday, there was little evidence of the attack at Kiel station: no memorial, blood or sign that a life had recently ended there. Police had closed the station for a few hours on Saturday, and when it reopened Sunday morning, it was scrubbed clean.
