Jocelyn Morlock Obituary – Death: Canadian composer and music educator cause of death

Jocelyn Morlock, a Canadian composer and music teacher who lived in Vancouver, was celebrated for her work in the classical music world. In 2018, she won the Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Year for her play “My Name is Amanda Todd”.

Morlock was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba, and received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Brandon University in 1994. There, she studied with Gerhard Ginader for Electroacoustic Music and was taught by T. Patrick Carrabré among others. She went on to earn her Master of Musical Arts and Doctorate degrees from the University of British Columbia in 1996 and 2002, respectively. During her time there, she was mentored by Stephen Chatman, Keith Hamel, and the late Nikolai Korndorf, a Russian-Canadian composer.

Morlock was Composer-in-Residence with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra from 2014 to 2019, having completed her tenure from 2012 to 2014. She was also the inaugural Composer-in-Residence at Music on Main in Vancouver, where she co-hosted The ISCM World New Music Day until 2017.

Morlock’s international career began in 1999 with a performance of her quartet “Birds in the Tangled Sky” in Romania at the International Association of Contemporary Music’s World Music Day. She went on to win the 2002 International Composers’ Podium Top 10 and the Prairie Region Emerging Competition Composer at the Canadian Music Center in 2004.
