Singer Kurosaki Maon died suddenly on February 16 after a chronic illness worsened, Art One Entertainment announced Tuesday.
Kurosaki underwent emergency surgery in September 2021 for an epidural hematoma (bleeding between the skull and the membrane surrounding the brain) after collapsing during a live concert.
Kurosaki rose to fame after performing in Tokyo’s Akihabara otaku shopping district before making his record label debut with the ending credits theme for the anime High School of the Dead. “The Magical World” performed by her is the ending song of The Catalog of Magical Forbidden Books II, which debuted in the top 20 of Oricon Weekly Singles Chart. Since then, she has created Dances with Dragons, Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope Peak High School: Arc of the Future, Drifters, Gray Anime Project, Bo Wanggui, Ye Meng and the Perfect Order, Magatsu Truth-First-, School-Live!, Shakugan didn’t contribute Shana III (ending), Star Blazers 2199, Strike the Blood, and Tokyo Ravens. Most recently, she sang the final theme song for the first anime “Reincarnation Sword” which premiered in October.
Kurosaki’s first anime song was for 2010’s High School of the Dead, with the singer singing all 12 of the show’s ending theme songs (one for each episode). Some of her other songs are “Magic∞world” (first ending of A Certain Magical Index), “SCARS” (end credits theme to Hellsing: Ultimate IX), “Last Desire” (beginning of Rewrite 2nd Season) and “Harmonize Clover” and “Afterglow” (both ending songs from School-Live!).
Kurosaki’s last anime song is “more<STRONGLY”, which is the ending theme for the Fall 2022 anime “Reincarnated Sword”. It is her 18th single.
In addition to her solo activities, Kurosaki also participated in the trio ALTIMA (which ceased operations in 2016) and the duo ALICes. Kurosaki’s ALICes colleague Sayaka Kanda died in December 2021 at the age of 35 after being found in an outdoor area on the 14th floor of a hotel in Sapporo.
