Randall Robinson (born July 6, 1941) is an African-American lawyer, author and activist best known as the founder of TransAfrica. He is known for his vehement opposition to apartheid and for his defense of Haitian immigrants and Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Robinson immigrated to St. Kitts in 2001 due to dissatisfaction with American society.
Robinson was born in Richmond, Virginia, to Maxi Cleveland Robinson and Doris Robinson Griffin, both teachers. The late ABC news anchor Max Robinson is his older brother. Randall Robinson is a graduate of Virginia Union University and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School. He also has an older sister, actress Jules Robinson, and a younger sister, Reverend Jean Robinson. The two sisters live and work in Washington, DC.
He and his ex-wife have a daughter, Anick Robinson, and a son, Jabari Robinson. He is married to Hazel Ross-Robinson and they have a daughter, Khalea Ross-Robinson.
Robinson was a civil rights attorney in Boston (1971–75) before working for U.S. Congressman Bill Clay (1975) and as executive assistant to Congressman Charles Diggs ( 1976). He is a Ford Scholar.
Robinson founded the TransAfrica Forum in 1977, which, according to its mission statement, serves as the “principal research, educational and organizing institution for the African American Analyzing and serving her West Indians.” “Africans dispersed in the Caribbean and Latin America due to the transatlantic slave trade.”[8] Until 2001 he was President of TransAfrica.
