Rick Scheckman Obituary – Death: Veteran Film Coordinator With David Letterman, Rick Scheckman Passed Away At 67, Cause Of Death

Rick Scheckman, who had been a colleague of David Letterman for over three decades, passed away at the age of 67 on Friday at Bellevue Hospital in New York due to “multiple health issues,” according to his friend Leonard Maltin.

Scheckman became a member of the team of “Late Night With David Letterman” in 1982, just a month after the show’s NBC debut. He quickly impressed the staff and was soon promoted to the position of film coordinator as a full-time employee. Later, when Letterman moved to CBS, Scheckman followed and continued working with him on “The Late Show,” even making appearances as an actor in some sketches. He stayed with the show until it ended.

Scheckman was renowned for being a film collector and had an extraordinary talent for locating obscure film clips in a matter of moments. “He was, as a small number of people are in their jobs, utterly irreplaceable,” wrote blogger Mark Evanier, who was also a friend of Scheckman.

He graduated from New York University and Baruch College and received a Master’s degree from the latter. Recently, he donated his 16mm film collection to the Library of Congress.

Scheckman is survived by his brother, Michael, and no details about any memorial services have been disclosed.
