Browning began a career in water shows and producing shows. Working in Wakulla Springs in the 1940s, Browning learned to appear in underwater newsreels conceived by Newt Perry, and he later brought Browning with him when he opened Weeki Wachee Springs.

While working at Wakulla Springs in 1953, Browning was asked to lead film crews on scouting locations. According to Browning, “Her cameraman asked me if I could swim in front of the camera so they could see the size of a man in front of the fish and grass. So I did.” A few days later, the crew invited Browning to Played the eponymous Gilman in the film Creatures of the Black Lagoon (1954). Browning accepted and played the Gilman in the film’s underwater scenes, while actor Ben Chapman played the monster on land. Browning reportedly held his breath underwater for up to four minutes during filming. Browning reprized his underwater Gilman role in two sequels, Revenge of the Monster (1955) and Monsters Walk Among Us (1956).

He went on to work in filmmaking and joined Ivan Tors Studios in Florida, where he co-wrote and co-produced the 1963 film Flipper (about a clever bottlenose dolphin); Browning also directed the second film. Unit’s underwater scene. Browning went on to write for the subsequent Pinball television series, which premiered in 1964. He directed the underwater scenes in Hello Down There (1969), and directed the family film Salty (1973) and the cult classic Mr. No Legs (1978). He also served as second unit director, stunt coordinator, and underwater sequence director on a number of feature films, including Thunderbolt (1965), Underwater World (1966), Lost Island (1967), Caddy’s Cabin (1980), and Everlasting Never Say Never (1983).
