Jeff Garlin and his character Murray, the Philadelphia father on ABC’s “The Goldbergs,” have officially left the sitcom for good. Wednesday’s season 10 premiere kicked off with a major time jump — and the long-dead Patriarch Garin. The episode opens with an adult Adam Goldberg (voiced by Patton Oswalt) explaining how the summer of the 1980s went by. “Yeah, life moves fast. Sometimes too fast, because this year one thing stopped everything,” Goldberg said, pausing as the camera zoomed in on Murray’s empty chaise longue under the spotlight. “We lost our dad suddenly a few months ago. Dad, we love you forever, always. We will find a way to continue working together.”

The episode follows Murray’s wife, Beverly (Wendy McLendon-Covey), cleaning out her husband’s belongings and trying to find his beloved but misplaced armchair. Meanwhile, son Barry (Troy Gentile) builds a “dream field” on the family farm in hopes that his father will return to tag.

Murray never appeared in the episode. In the final season, doubles and post-production workarounds were used to portray Murray after the 60-year-old Garin left the show following an investigation into his on-set conduct and misconduct allegations.
