Queer Eye’s first episode nearly had a completely different ending than the one we saw. In the rebooted Netflix series, Tom Jackson was introduced as a man who desperately needed a confidence boost, and The Fab Five gave him just that with a new wardrobe, home makeover, and lupus color correction. Viewers were drawn to Tom and his lovable personality, and the episode ended with him reuniting with his ex-wife Abby, months later, and the couple tied the knot again. However, it turns out that the reunion was not in the original plan.
Karamo Brown revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the original idea was to help Tom move on from his divorce from Abby and improve his online dating profile. However, things changed when Antoni Porowski heard a comment from Tom about sugar being candy for his daughter. This led Tom to admit that he still loved Abby and wanted to spend his life with her, which in turn led the Fab Five to help them get back together.
Although the episode did not show it, Karamo helped Tom improve his dating profile and build his confidence to meet different women. The cultural expert seems pleased with the outcome. The Fab Five never publicly discussed the change in the episode.
