Kirk Levin was granted freedom on January 1, 2013, following a prison sentence. However, instead of making a fresh start, he embarked on a criminal path that led him to kill his 45-year-old mother and abduct a woman he had met online. Levin didn’t waste any time and committed the heinous act only two days after being released. He fled to Storm Lake, Iowa, where he met an online acquaintance named Jessica Vega, whom he tricked into leaving her apartment before abducting her. Fortunately, she managed to escape after their car crashed into a ditch, and she found help.
Levin was convicted of first-degree murder and third-degree kidnapping later that year and is currently serving a life sentence at Iowa State Penitentiary. He was released from Mount Pleasant prison on January 1 after serving 26 months of his 5-year sentence on third-degree burglary charges. He was also accused of abducting Jessica Vega from her Storm Lake residence. After Vega contacted authorities on January 3, reporting the assault and kidnapping, Levin was eventually apprehended hiding in a nearby barn. He was charged with kidnapping, assault, and other related allegations.
